The secret is creating the conditions for great inner work life
There are two things we know from the research on high-performance work systems:
1) They are consistently associated with superior business outcomes, across a range of indicators.
2) High-performance approaches are the exception rather than the norm.
High performance is consistently associated with the opportunity for learning and meaningful work (more about that in the next blog post). I will leave the last word to the wonderful Theresa Amabile and Steve Kramer:
“The secret is creating the conditions for great inner work life - the conditions that foster positive emotions, strong internal motivation, and favourable perceptions of colleagues and the work itself. Great inner work life is about the work, not the accoutrements. It starts with giving people something meaningful to accomplish … it requires giving clear goals, autonomy, help, and resources.”
We know all this. We also know that people value learning and making a difference.
It really is high time to put all this knowledge and wisdom to work.

NOTES
It seems everything I read at the moment talks about getting the fundamentals right and you have more chance to succeed. And those fundamentals are employee happiness and passion.
