Can you really design the user experience?

The more I think on this the more I feel strongly that you can’t design what people popularly call ‘user-experience’. You can, though, account for the variables that contribute to an experience with some of these being easier to account for than others. In essence, this is because we can influence how someone is likely to feel when they experience our products and services but we can never hope to account for the myriad of possible contexts and motivations a person might have.
