What does ‘social collaboration’ mean?

Where people collaborate outside of the contractual obligations? Which means outside of the role structures & job descriptions in the organization? Typical of a matrix organization, no? What do you think? What are your views on ‘social collaboration’ and ‘role power’ in a collaborative enterprise (a bit more complex than a matrix organization)?

NOTES

This is interesting but there may be a intrinsic motivation barrier as well as an organisational design barrier.

Here’s an excerpt from me:

The fact is that what we do has consequences on other groups, and what we know from other groups can have consequences for what we do. The issue is that we don’t have motivation to care beyond our own groupbecause we don’t have time to spread our attention and care beyond what we are doing, and we arerewarded for our task at hand ie. we are not measured for how well we are aware, share, our resourcefulness, sensitivity to other groups.

Basically cooperation and the silo problem are the same thing.

If we don’t have the time, motivation, and are not rewarded to be aware of other groups, then what’s the answer to bridging silos and cooperation…I think it’s ambient awareness, and 20pc.
